Bats
Characteristics
Bats typically congregate together in colonies. They’re found in caves, hollow trees, and buildings and will feed over open fields, along woodland edges, or over lakes & streams. Bats are nocturnal, and feed exclusively on insects.
Reproduction:
Bats mate in fall & winter, the pups are born April through June, and there’s usually only one newborn per mother per year.
Control:
If there is only one hole, plug the hole at night after all the bats have left. If there is more than one hole, plug all the holes except one (this may be done during the day). Wait a few days, and then plug the final hole at night after they’ve left. Anything can be used as a temporary seal, as bats will not gnaw and claw their way into a building. NOTE: Do not exclude bats during the summer months (April to August). During these months there are likely to be babies that are unable to fly. If the pups are trapped inside, they will die and create odor problems. |
